Nordic major SF Studios´ feature film Borg/McEnroe will officially open the Toronto Film Festival on September 7th. It is the first Swedish film ever to open TIFF.
Borg/McEnroe is a film about one of the world’s greatest icons Björn Borg and his biggest rival, the young and talented John McEnroe and their legendary duel during the 1980’s Wimbledon tournament. It’s a story about two men who changed the face of tennis and who became legends and the price they had to pay.
The film stars one of Sweden’s most successful young actors Sverrir Gudnason as Björn Borg and American actor Shia LaBoeuf as his antagonist John McEnroe. They are supported by internationally acclaimed actor Stellan Skarsgård as Borg’s legendary trainer Lennart Bergelin and Tuva Novotny as Borg’s wife at the time, Mariana Simionescu. Robert Emms is portraying Vitas Gerulaitis, Ian Blackman McEnroe’s father and in a small role Björn Borg’s own son, Leo Borg, is portraying his father as a youngster.
“Being one of the world’s most prestigious international film festivals we are deeply honored and very proud that TIFF has chosen Borg/McEnroe to open the event, especially since this is the first time ever for a Swedish film”, says Michael Porseryd, CEO at SF Studios.
”Our goal has been to honor the legacy of Björn Borg and John McEnroe with a film that would engage and touch the hearts of audiences worldwide. To start that journey by opening TIFF makes us both humble and happy. Now it´s up to the audience to decide if we have succeeded”, says the film´s producers Jon Nohrstedt and Fredrik Wikström Nicastro.
The Borg/McEnroe project was announced in Cannes 2016 and immediately received a lot of attention in international media and with international buyers and distributors. Shooting commenced in 2016 on locations in Prague, Monaco and the Swedish cities of Gothenburg and Södertälje. The film has already been sold to over 150 countries on the international market, including the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, South Korea, Poland, Latin America, China and Australia with theatrical releases this fall.
