Director Frederikke Aspöck has started filming her new Danish feature film “De Frivillige” starring Jacob Lohmann, Søren Malling, Christopher Læssø and Anders Matthesen

Award-winning director, Frederikke Aspöck, known for the critically acclaimed drama of 2015 “Rosita”, has started filming on Funen for her new, dark comedy “De Frivillige” with the strong cast Jacob Lohmann, Søren Malling, Christopher Læssø and Anders Matthesen in leading roles. The film was written by the film writing debutant Lars Husum and is expected to premiere in 2019.

“De Frivillige” is an intelligent, dark comedy drama about celebrity financier and jet-setter Markus Føns, who has been taken into custody. Following a brutal assault by a gang of bikers with connections to some of his shadier dealings, Markus opts for voluntary solitary confinement among the prison’s weak inmates. The isolation ward has a prison choir, of which inmate Niels (Anders Matthesen) is the unofficial and self-proclaimed leader. Markus decides to join the choir and before long has his mind set on reaching the top of its hierarchy. This battle is not fought with muscles, but with cunning, tyranny and canonical Danish songs!

Director Frederikke Aspöck adds: “It is this completely absurd power struggle, played out in the voluntary confinement where society’s rejects are incarcerated. The film challenges our sense of community versus egoism and will leave the audience with food for thought and of course a good laugh!”

Frederikke Aspöck debuted in 2004 with the award-winning short “Happy Now” that was elected for competition at Tribeca, Deauville and Cannes Film Festival. “Happy Now” was her graduating work from the prestigious Tisch school of the Arts in New York. She debuted her first Danish short film “Sheep” in 2009 and her second short “Moving on” in 2011. That year, she also premiered her first feature film – the drama “Out of Bounds” – and in 2015 premiered her latest film “Rosita” starring celebrated Danish actors Mikkel Boe Følsgaard and Jens Albinus, which received high acclaim from critics.

Frederikke Aspöck has succeeded in assembling an impressive cast for “De Frivillige”. Jacob Lohmann, two-time nominee at the Danish Academy Awards for his role in the Danish TV-drama “Norskov”, latest starring in “Department Q: A Conspiracy of Faith”, “Darkland” and “3 Things”. Anders Matthesen, who is set to premiere his film adaptation of his own children’s book debut “Ternet Ninja” later this year while also having his 25th anniversary standup show “Anden 25”. Christopher Læssø, who can currently be seen in “Denmark has talent”, was most recently seen in the Oscar-nominated “The Square”. Søren Malling received high praise this past year for his work in “The Man”, “Pound for Pound” and “Word of God”. Other central roles stars Signe Egholm, Ulla Henningsen, Anders Brink, Finn Nielsen, Petrine Agger and Saszeline Dreyer.

“De Frivillige” is produced by Senia Dremstrup at SF Studios in Denmark in collaboration with TV 2 and FilmFyn. The film is funded by The Danish Film Institute through commissioning editor Mikkel Munch-Fals and is distributed by SF Studios.
